BBQ Pink Oyster Mushroom Sandwiches

Last weekend the Palm Springs Farmers Market granted me Pink Oyster Mushrooms from Canyon Creek Mushrooms. I was lucky as we slept in and they had two bags of mushrooms left—one was the pink. After hunting recipes I settled on the caramelized bbq sandwiches

I loved these! Carmelize them in a hot pan with some spicy seasonings…and toss in bbq sauce and then sauté them quickly again.

Here’s how they start:

Here is the last sauté before they hit the toast:

I used my favorite bbq sauce from We Love Jam

And I plated these beauties with a coleslaw

I’m gonna do this again. It’s a lot of low and slow time getting a nice caramelization but well worth it!

Return to the Santa Monica Farmers Market

Finally back to the market after nearly 4 months…we tried two weeks ago but protests had it closed down (the same neighborhood had had looters)…there are still lots of boarded up windows:

But the market was busy even though its way spread out for distancing:

On of the prizes and purposes for the trip was mara des bois…from Harrys Berries

Pricey but he loves them.

I went for tomatoes and they finally are debuting:

Also found were lemon cucumbers and german butterballs.

And our first goat cheese in a long while.

This is the closest to normal i have felt in a while even with masks and spacing. I needed a brief moment to be happy….

Stuffed Red Peppers

I have already misplaced the recipe for the red pepper recipe this week…but i made it! It was an ATK recipe challenge email featuring season produce

I slightly mashed some canned garbanzos

Added capers, lime juice, olive oil, gluten free bread crumbs, garlic and crumbled goat cheese.

Roasted the pepper

Stuffed it..added some goat cheese on top with and olive oil drizzle.

Baked it

Served it up with a pile of salad

I am constantly taking pictures of food that i see and i have fallen so far behind in sharing lately.   Im going to try and do a catch up of the last couple weeks of things that I thought were fun enough to share.  Passionflowers are blooming, figs and squash are in season.   We are like a week or two away from the Southern California summer cornucopia of ridiculous bounty.

My neighbor at the community garden has a full on passionflower wall growing.  I have never had the fruit.   I was planning to trellis one in my backyard this year but a young plant wont survive our july vaca so after we return.

The van nuys german deli is sooo close to my house:

Usually i will get two smoked brats, 2 swiss and 2 neurenberger for the 2 of us and simmer in saurkraut and wine…

Head cheese anyone?

1/9 food finds

while at the farmers market and out and about we found a few fun things to try or think about trying.

Root veggies are the spotlight at the farmers market this week

I bought some pretty pink and blue potatoes…these are colored clear through so they lose their color less than those with just a colored skin

It’s been cold so the avocado su ply train is getting a bit week.

Tiny iceberg lettuces!

Assorted cute little lettuces

And a Penzeys trip

My penzeys haul this week… The Turkish oregano was free (coupon)

Macaron for Jim at lemonade

Buffalo milk butter at whole foods

Cognac barrels!  I already have the bourbon barrel version at home waiting to be savored

Needed to try my Singapore spice from penzeys so made a sort of Singapore noodle

And some tofu lettuce cups

Fun food finds 1/2/16

We were Santa Monica farmers market bound today and since winter is usually bland I wasn’t taking any pics until I ran into this this thing so I started with the food pics….

Having no idea what it was, I bought some.  Wikipedia and several sites have cleared up my lack of knowledge…Mountain yams are a Asian tuber that turn into goo if you grate and get mucilaginous plus have an itchy skin that needs soaked in water and vinegar to neutralize…sounds like a winner here :-p

Kohlrabi are also in season as I found baby ones last weekend

Sun chokes have been about for a month or so but few in attendance this week–one vendor said the ground was too frozen to harvest

Sweet limes…which I always look at but never buy….and they aren’t green!

Unhusked walnuts which I haven’t seen in person since I used to have to collect them from my grandpas yard

Mushrooms!  Including white truffle which I passed on hoping for black truffle soon…but I picked up some hedgehogs

My favorite cheese vendor provided me with a raw 1year aged white cheddar

Jim found giant macaron that are gluten free at the newly opened Lemonade

And I picked up the foodies coloring book at Barnes and noble!

Farmers market 11/1

whats this?

Can you see the lines that run along it?  It sorta looks like a long bean but not really and it has basically no smell…anyone?

Also the radishes and carrots are in which are pretty

Persimmons and apples

I did get onion sprouts and wheat grass (the latter for the cats)
